    Anyone spent time in Chile?
You may or may not have heard, but I'm going to spent most of next year teaching English in Chile, through WorldTeach. It is, at long last, time to get out of town for a while.

My placement will be in Santiago, Valparaíso, Concepción, or Viña del Mar, and they're nice enough to ask my preference. I'm inclined to dodge Santiago's bigness and pollution (despite it having aikido and Zen I could connect to) and Valparaíso's and Viña del Mar's tourism, but I really have no idea. Have any of you been to any of these places? Any suggestions?

Also, if you know anyone in South America who might be willing to have a useful and friendly American visit (I can cook! and, uh, teach self-defense classes), please let me know. :-)

(Yep, I'm excited. It's terrifying, but I decided this was the thing to do, so here we go.)

    I'd rather be making money.
About a month ago I lost my job to a management spasm, and things have just now settled down and I'm looking for some work to fill the time and have some money coming in.

So, anyone need a software engineer? I've been doing complex Perl since 2005, but I also know Java and can be useful in Python or Ruby very quickly.

My plans for the coming six months are a little in flux, so I'm looking for a short-term commitment for now. A temporary grant-based academic project or something would be perfect.

Nasty tab-text shadowing in Firefox 3
I upgraded to Firefox 3, and it's okay enough...I'm finding the usual workarounds for things, except that now the tab text is...not good. Larger image is here; as you can see, the shadowing is pretty awful and makes the tabs almost unreadable. It's OS X 10.4 on a MacBook Pro with no problems. Anyone else dealt with this? The internet hasn't been able to help so far. :-(

You people have been to Portland, right?
As part of my now-nutty flurry of traveling in the coming month, I'm going to Portland for five days after Thanksgiving. I've never been there and don't know a whole lot about it, so I'd love suggestions on:
    • places to eat
    • places to stay (especially cheap places near fun stuff)
    • things to do
So far I have the following:
    • the Japanese garden
    • the Chinese garden
    • Powell's
    • the Shanghai tunnels tour
    • Voodoo Doughnut
    • Apizza Scholls
    • Southeast Portland, which is supposed to be the hip funky new neighborhood
    More ideas?

    must...follow...herd...
I hadn't planned on ever posting here, but I'm struck by a meme from [info]bluepoof:

    Comment and I will:
    1. Tell you why I friended you.
    2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, etc.
    3. Tell you something I like about you.
    4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
    5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
    6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
    7. In return, post this in your LJ. [If you want. I'm not really a chain-letter kind of guy.]
